This little island may not look very impressive on paper but it was very important for the Battle of Breach Inlet on June 28th 1776. The patriots set up sharp shooters on the island to pick off the British soldiers as they attempted to cross from Long Island (Isle of Palms) to Sullivans Island. The remainder of the battle that day was at Fort Sullivan later renamed Fort Moultrie in honor of it’s commander, Col William Moultrie. We now celebrate this major military defeat of the British as Carolina Day. The creation and dredging of the Intracoastal Waterway has changed the island from it’s original shape.
