Originally granted in 1694 this lot was adjacent to a stream that ran from the Ashley River to what became the lower end of Legare Street. Later that portion was filled and the owner sold it to Miles Brewton whose property was the back of this lot but faced King Street. Sadly, the Brewton family were lost at sea in 1775 and the parcel was sold by Brewton’s sisters in 1791. The purchaser was William Alston, also known as King Billy. He was an incredibly wealthy rice planter from the Waccamaw neck area. One of his passions was horse racing and stables were built at the back of the home on King Street which faced Legare Street. His thoroughbreds would walk from Newmarket Races to the stable with a crowd following them down Legare Street.
