According to the Bates Leland 1698 map of Charleston the present day location of the home at # 1 Legare Street would have been part of lot 283 from the Grand Model. A grant was awarded in 1694 but apparently never used. This became part of land pooled together by 4 owners of lots that were water, marsh and lowland and later infilled.
